Cloud subscription flow

Purpose

Audit and update all copy within the APEX console MVP, focusing primarily on new order subscription flows.

Overview

The APEX Console varying workflows were built by a team of five designers including a principal design lead. There were not clear definitions of terms to inform the design, including whether to call services orders or subscriptions. The project was divided into three steps:

  1. Audit the console and document all inconsistent or overlapping terms.

  2. Work with product management and the business transformation office to align on taxonomy of terms for the product.

  3. Reconcile inconsistent terms in the console.

Approach

Partner with Dell’s business transformation office to review competitive analysis and research. Then, create proposals for taxonomy and terms based both on the product Dell is offering and existing mental models created by industry competitors.

One proposals are finalized, meet with the director of product management and members of the business transformation office for approvals.

Results

I worked with my design team to remediate 170 Figma screens across the console before handoff to development. Once the console was in testing, I did a quality assurance check before the console was pushed to beta with customers.

Impact

  • Created a taxonomy for all products and workflows within the APEX Console. This created a foundation for consistent messaging in subscription configurators, monitoring workflows, and all subsequent communications such as emails. This taxonomy is still used today by UX writing teams on the Content Engineering and Translation team.

  • As a team, we were able to align on terminology that matched Dell’s priorities for building and marketing an as-a-service portfolio of products.

  • Reference material was created additionally to help prevent costly overhauls in the future. This improved design’s wireframes as they showed accurate labelling and content, and reduced confusion at handoff with development.

Then select Dell APEX Hybrid Cloud to view the configuration flows that were part of the Console’s MVP release. The video will ask you to make selections in order to proceed to the next step in the configurator.

Note that the slider functionality was not part of the MVP release. However, site details and associated site detail flows were completed for MVP.
